Dollar Academy

Dollar Academy is one of Scotland’s leading schools, providing boarding and day education for boys and girls aged from 5-18.

Founded in 1818, DollarAcademy has a proud heritage and an outstanding academic reputation. The school helps students develop the enthusiasm, ability and ambition to meet successfully the challenges of university and beyond.


High quality teaching produces outstanding academic achievement and examination results regularly top league tables. Dollar pupils are highly successful in winning places at top universities and the school offers specialised courses and industry placements to support applications in Medicine, Law, Engineering and Business. The art and music departments are of national renown.


There are over 70 extra–curricular clubs on offer including sports, art, music, drama and cultural activities. From rugby and cricket, to surfing, shooting and falconry, there is no shortage of options. Musically, there is a world champion pipe band, a variety of large and small scale productions and concerts, and a choice of twelve choirs and orchestras. There is also a full CCF programme with a very well supported Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

Dollar teams are always among the strongest in the country and the school has Internationalists across a range of activities. It is perhaps more important, however, to note that the school places great emphasis on taking part; every pupil has the opportunity to perform and compete, often achieving success in activities that they have never tried before.


Dollar Academy is located between the university cities of St Andrews and Edinburgh. The school occupies a beautiful 70 acre open campus in the centre of a picturesque Scottish town; edged on one side by a golf course, with breath-taking views of Scottish scenery.

Dollar Academy is just 30 minutes’ drive from Edinburgh International Airport with dozens of direct flights each day to London and the continent.

The boarding facilities are of the highest standard, spacious and well equipped.  The boarding houses are run by ‘House Parents’, who live with their families permanently on site, creating a real home-from-home for students, with genuine kindness and care. The result is a first class boarding environment, rated ‘Excellent’ in all aspects by the Scottish Care Commission.

There is a range of activities on offer to boarding students, including a full programme of sports, social events and excursions during weekends. Boarding pupils also benefit from an on-site gymnasium, swimming pool and all weather courts.

Admissions & Fees

Entry requirements

Parents can contact the Headmaster (The Rector) at to discuss the interests and abilities of their child. Visits to the school with an opportunity to meet key staff and pupils in relevant year groups can be arranged at any time of year.  Bursaries and scholarships are available.

Testing and open days

We have high academic standards and most of our pupils go on to the top universities in the UK and the rest of the world, including Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews. Applicants may be required to sit an entrance test, but it is not necessary to come to the school in order to sit the test: this can be arranged in another way. High standards of behaviour are expected and we need also to see a copy of a recent school report. International applicants require a good working knowledge of English in order to benefit from the education on offer. Visits to the school with an opportunity to meet key staff and pupils in relevant year groups can be arranged at any time of the year.

Scholarships and Bursaries

Bursaries of up to 100% are available for pupils joining the school in Form I and these include boarding. Means-Tested Boarding Bursaries and Boarding Scholarships are also available and there are discounts for Services families.
